Brazil’s largest beauty salon franchise, Jacques Janine invests in global expansion

With over 60 shops in eight Brazilian states and annual revenues of R$ 100 million, Jacques Janine has consolidated its position as the largest beauty salon chain not only in Brazil, but also in Latin America.

The company, which is now investing in its global expansion, was founded 55 years ago by French couple Jacques and Janine Goossens – hairdresser and beautician –, who met in Brazil during the 1957 Carnival.

The starting point for the brand’s overseas operations was Orlando, in the US. The first salon opened its doors in October 2015, at one of Florida’s main commercial centers, the Orlando Crossings Mall. Jacques Janine’s first US franchise covers an area of 230m2 and has a team of 20 beauty professionals – including hairdressers, beauticians, waxers and makeup artists. The services offered are the same as those of the Brazilian franchises.

The US was selected mainly because of the large number of Brazilians currently living in the country. Figures from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs show that around one million Brazilians were living in the US in 2013. This exodus has increased even further in recent years due to the economic downturn in Brazil and an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 Brazilians live in Florida alone.

However, Jacques Janine also aims to win over American customers, particularly women, with its signature bridal services, manicure and the ever-popular Brazilian wax. Jacques Janine’s salon in Orlando is expected to welcome around 800 clients a month and reach average annual revenues of US$ 800,000.

The chain plans to open two other salons in Florida this year and end 2017 with up to six franchise stores in the US.
