BASF acquires Dutch company Isobionics and enters the market for natural ingredients for fragrances

According to BASF, the potential change in consumer behavior and the lack of natural ingredients on the market have led the company to take this strategic step. According to Julia Raquet, global vice-president of the Aroma Ingredients business at the company, the aromas and fragrances industry has a need for raw materials. However, the variations in quality, availability and sustainability of these products are still a challenge for the sector.

With the acquisition, BASF increases its portfolio with natural aromatic ingredients such as nootkatone and valencene, two citrus oil components that are the focus of Isobionics’ biotechnological production. According to Isobionics founder Toine Janssen, by combining their know-how and expertise with BASF’s global reach, the company will be able to provide more innovation to the market and encourage its growth.

According to the deal, Isobionics and all of its employees will join the Aroma Ingredients business at BASF. The division also celebrated the closing of a cooperation contract with North-American company Conagen, a leader in research in biotechnology. Thanks to this partnership, the multinational chemical company will also offer natural vanillin in its portfolio, one of the most desirable aromatic ingredients in the market.
