Nail polishes: Technical and business challenges

Nail enamels have become an intrinsic product of a make up line, internationally. For some, they are true fashion accessories. And, indeed what an evolution of a product!

Among the levers of change that affected this colour make up product the necessary evolution of the formulas to adapt them to the international regulations is a key factor.

To mention a few:
- Replacement of the toluene (roughly 25% of the formulation!).
- Replacement of the formaldehyde resin.
- Replacement of the phthalates.
- Introduction of a variety of pearls, glitters, aluminum powders, etc.

These changes have triggered some fundamental challenges in terms of stability, that the formulators have resolved, and allow the nail enamel colour range to be wider and more stable than ever. They also have had a major impact on the characteristics and performances of the product, and for the best. As an example, a few decades ago, a “Fast Dry Nail Enamel” would dry in a few minutes. Today, it is the case of a regular Nail Polish, when a “Fast Dry” will take less than a minute to dry, without affecting that much the wear properties.

It has also been necessary to adapt the nail polishes to specific markets, as in Brazil, where the economical situation and the in-use conditions are different from other economical zones.

Nail Polishes have also enjoyed major changes in terms of:
- Packaging: bottle shapes, brushes, caps, materials....
- Special effects: Crackle, Magnetics, Jelly Like, etc....

All these issues will be discussed during round table on December 3rd at 1:30pm during MakeUp in SaoPaulo.

The panel with the participation of Pierre Miasnik (Fiabila); Eric Wimmer (Garance Inc.); Cecilia Manzoni (Baralan), will develop all these points and more and will be happy to take any questions from the audience
