Cosmetic products were dragged into the diplomatic tensions between the United States and Turkey sparkled by the detention of pastor Andrew Brunson.

In a decree signed on 14 August 2018, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan responded to US sanctions against his country by increasing customs duties on several categories of products originating in the United States, including tobacco (60%), passenger cars (120%) and alcoholic beverages (140%). The decree also provides 60% customs duties for cosmetic products (HS position 3304).

Furthermore, the Turkish authorities have also called on their fellow citizens to boycott American products, citing in particular electronic devices. Certain Turkish websites have even published lists of U.S. brands to target.
