Silab unveils recent investments in a Microbiota Platform

Along with several other major players in the industry, Silab is deploying new research and development capabilities to better understand microbiota, the huge community of microorganisms that populate our most intimate surrounds, including our gut and skin.

The French supplier of natural actives has officially unveiled its "Microbiota Platform" that was created over a year ago. “True to its investment strategy at the service of innovation, Silab is Multidisciplinary, this specialist platform boasts the expertise and technologies required to investigate, in a cross-cutting and complementary manner, the microbiota of the skin’s ecosystems on the one hand and that of plants on the other hand, making it unique worldwide,” said the company in a release.

Silab targets an unprecedented approach to the microbiota in the cosmetic industry with a platform build around three scientific units:

- The Biotechnology unit works directly on plant ecosystems;
- The Molecular Biology unit analyzes imbalances in the skin microbiota in stressful conditions or during aging;
- The Microbiology unit is in charge of creating and developing a collection of cutaneous bacterial strains specific to Silab.

"The skin microbiota has primarily been studied in dermatology, in contexts of disease, but many chapters remain to be written regarding the microbiota of healthy and compromised skin and its imbalances. As specialists in mastering nature and biotechnologies, we have taken a more cross-cutting approach to this theme by also focusing on the plant microbiota. This microbiota, present from the roots to the nectar in flowers, contributes to the protection, nutrition and regeneration of plants," states Brigitte Closs-Gonthier, Deputy Managing Director, Research and Development, Silab.

Thanks to this "Microbiota Platform" Silab wants to accelerate the launch of natural and innovative active ingredients in this area, the first of which will be presented at in-cosmetics Global in April in Amsterdam.

Beauty trends: Green, clean… what’s next?

It is definitely a huge wave. To be desirable, a product should be green, clean, and cool – and preferably the Indie and DNVB [1] way. Green, because naturalness has become “a basic”. Clean, because products are required to be free from any polluting or suspicious substance. Cool, because they should offer the “special Millennial” (...)
