O Boticário to launch the World’s first fragrances developed by an Artificial Intelligence

Scheduled by the middle of 2019, O Boticário is launching the World’s first fragrances developed with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The two innovations were created together with Symrise, one of the most renowned fragrance houses in the world, and IBM Research.

To create a product targeted to the Millennial generation in Brazil, Symrise has used Phylira - an Artificial Intelligence solution developed by IBM Research that uses new and advanced automatic learning algorithms to examine millions of formulas and thousands of ingredients and thus identify new patterns and combinations. The computerized process resulted in two unusual fragrance combinations - combining notes of fruits, flowers, sweets, spices, woods and even cucumber.

"What looked like a totally unlikely combination resulted in fragrances that surprised even our staff and they just needed the Boticario’s final touch to be fully ready. It’s the perfect alchemy between man and machine, translated into perfumery," said Jean Bueno, Head Of Marketing & Innvation, Perfumery Category, at Boticário. The company’s research and development team just had refined the initial combinations proposed by the machine to reach the final versions of World’s first two fragrances created with the help of Artificial Intelligence.

"Insights on consumer preferences and the sensitivity of perfumers were essential to Philyra’s precision and this opens a new path to innovation in perfumery. Artificial Intelligence will certainly greatly optimize our development times - which include hundreds of submissions in a range of up to three years - and allow the Marketing and Research and Development teams to engage much more in the final combinations, to create the fragrance that will reach the consumer," said Tiago Martinello, Research and Development Manager at Grupo Boticário.

The names, packaging and other characteristics of the new fragrances have not been disclosed will be revealed by the middle of 2019. However, the products have already been tested and approved by experts in the segment.
