Givaudan launches a new family of fragrance precursors

Givaudan has announced the launch of Scentaurus, a family of fragrance precursors designed to expand the palette of ingredients allowing perfumers the possibility to formulate long lasting fragrances.

A fragrance precursor is a low odour molecule which, when exposed to an external trigger such as oxygen, light or water, will release at least one fragrant molecule. Using this technology for fragrance creation allows to bring long lastingness to fragrances in products such as fabric or home and personal care products. The technology also offers a way to counteract habituation by signalling unique top notes during the life of the fragrance.

In 2006, Givaudan was the first company to introduce a light cleavable fragrance precursor in the palette of ingredients with Scentaurus Tonkarose, a molecule that releases two different odorants. Givaudan is now completing its family of precursors by adding Scentaurus Clean, Scentaurus Juicy and Scentaurus Berry to the palette.

Each Scentaurus ingredient is exclusive to Givaudan Perfumers to offer high level of versatility in different olfactive families,” explains the flavours and fragrances giant.

Furthermore, the Scentaurus products were developed in line with Givaudan’s sustainability approach. The range is produced applying the green chemistry principles and allows the formulation of compacted fragrances.

Our new Scentaurus technology is revolutionary as it brings us a new evolution to the way of designing fragrances. Some olfactive notes can now be delivered at dry stage on fabrics that were not possible previously. More than just a new method of formulation, the precursors can deliver even more innovative formulas to our customers, and ultimately responds to consumer demands for ever more performant fragrances,” said Jeremy Compton, Head of Fragrance Science and Technology at Givaudan.
