Brazilian personal hygiene and cosmetics industry pledges to eliminate microplastics

Brazilian makers of toiletries, perfumes and cosmetics are adjusting to the global trend with a voluntary commitment to eliminate the use of solid microparticles of plastic in their products by 2021. The local industry also anticipates a possible regulatory framework in Brazil. Solid insoluble plastic microparticles in rinsed off products such as exfoliators will be replaced by other ingredients with a similar function but with eco-friendly properties.

Brazilian personal hygiene and cosmetics industry pledges to eliminate microplastics by 2021

"Although the impact of the microparticles used in these products is very limited, the industry has decided to eliminate their use, taking into account a global movement to reduce ocean pollution, but without compromising the quality and safety for consumers. The United Kingdom, France, the USA and, more recently, Japan, have already taken measures to prohibit the use of these ingredients in cosmetics and in personal hygiene products," explains the Brazilian Association of Personal Hygiene, Perfumery and Cosmetics Industry (ABIHPEC).

Microplastics are used in the formulation of some personal care products and may be defined as any intentionally added solid plastic particles (with a size equal to or less than 5 mm) used to exfoliate or clean.

According to ABIHPEC, the challenge to meet this voluntary commitment is great, given the complexity in identifying alternative ingredients that are proven to be both safe and effective for consumer use. New formulations and ingredients need to be evaluated and tested, and to comply with the legal requirements that regulate this segment.
