Holiday Retail Insights

This year, the Thanksgiving weekend sales (Nov. 24-27) promised to be excellent. Good news, 45 % of Americans already started their Christmas shopping before the first of November. As many as 79 % of the retailers started offering discounts and promotions earlier than last year, and 17% of consumers said they did not want to celebrate Thanksgiving to make sure they get the best deals. Total sales in 2016 for the same period generated $9.36 billion, an increase of + 16.4% [1].

For their part, the leaders of distribution do not intend to let e-commerce steal this week of business, especially since the weather is supposed to be clement on the East coast this year.

"Digital first" may be not!

Clearly, war has been declared. Walmart released a 32-page catalog of only the favorite brands of its customers: iPhone, Samsung, Xbox, Sony, Nintendo... Target, not wanting to be left behind in the hi-tech war, and to remain competitive, offered a $250 gift card for everyone buying a smartphone. After hearing this, Walmart immediately responded by offering a $300 gift card and free two-day shipping for the entire USA. Perks are making this crazy race a pleasure: reserved parking spaces, hot coffee, and entertainment for children. Of the 164 million American "shoppers", 90% of Millennials and Generation Z have announced their intention to participate in this huge Amazing Race.

The results are already very encouraging, US retail is up + 4.1% in the second quarter. [2]

Let’s congratulate Nordstrom’s initiative to shine the spotlight on their beauty department and its premium hair products, which provides the opportunity to purchase a professional hair dryer at a very affordable price. Kylie Jenner (Kylie Cosmetics) has opened a pop-up store in Manhattan (608 Fifth Avenue) from November 20th to December 20th. She presents her new eye shadow and highlighter palates along with her Christmas collections. The brand already has other pop-ups in Atlanta, Chicago, L.A., Las Vegas, Miami, and Houston ...

All about experience

Everything is fair in love and war – and to attract consumers. The most highly anticipated event this November is Ulta opening a new format in Manhattan (144 East 86th street).

The Estée Lauder Group has increased its holdings with the opening of its first store in Milan and a flagship store in Covent Garden dedicated to its favorite brand Tom Ford, which has had a record year. With profits close to one trillion dollars, a sales increase of more than 50%, this new setting offers the opportunity to test "live" all the novelties of the creator such as his new range "The Eyes of Tom Ford", his new eau de parfum: Fucking Fabulous ... This new concept store dedicated to Beauty combines technology with beauty. And so, Color Room, Makeup Room, and Fragrance Room were born: three universes to explore the creativity, the irreverence, and the vision of an immense creator.
