Cosmogen: “We are considering the opportunity to produce in Brazil.”

In 2013, French supplier of cosmetic applicators Cosmogen achieved a global turnover of EUR 21 million (R$ 64 million) and doubled its sales in Brazil, which now represent 15 per cent of the company’s business. Flavio Unikowsky, Manager Latin America at Cosmogen tells Brazil Beauty News how the company is dealing with the Brazilian cosmetics market.

Brazil Beauty News - Cosmogen started its operations in Brazil only four years ago but the country now represents 15 per cent of the company’s business. What are the reasons for this success?

Flavio Unikowsky - The Brazilian personal care market, including skin care and coloured cosmetics, has been growing very fast over the last five years. While the market - in particular in the make up category - remains highly concentrated between a few large companies, there are a lot of fast growing brands that are emerging. Cosmogen provided them a wide portfolio of packaging and applicators to stand out from the mass of competitors. Despite a recent slowdown, the market carries on growing steadily and some companies and segments are still enjoying impressive growth rates.

Brazil Beauty News - Access to the Brazilian market is reputed to be very difficult for foreign companies.

Flavio Unikowsky - That’s quite true, this is due to high import tariffs and to technical barriers to trade, but also to a lack of international trade culture. At the time of hyper-inflation [1], buying in a foreign currency was a very risky business. Another reason is linked to the importance of direct sellers in Brazil. The reliability - and the accuracy - of the supply chain is a key factor of success in this business, and local sourcing is a good way to achieve this goal. However, as the competition from foreign high-end brands is increasing and as the quality of Brazilian-made products is upgrading, Brazilian cosmetics makers are increasingly looking for innovations and new packaging, including from abroad.

Nevertheless, the Brazilian culture remains very focused on local production.

Brazil Beauty News - Does that mean Cosmogen will have to produce in Brazil to grow further on the market?

Flavio Unikowsky - That’s an option we are considering! As Cosmogen does not run any factory of its own, the company has the possibility to produce anywhere. This flexibility is one of our strengths and we have started our search for the right partners.
