BASF manufacturing unit in South America gets RSPO certification

BASF plant in Jacareí, São Paulo, has just received RSPO [1] certification for the production of certified Mass Balance (MB) ingredients.

"We want to support our customers so as they can achieve their goals regarding the acquisition of sustainable ingredients for the formulation of personal and home care products," said Agustín Sanchez, vice president of BASF’s Care Chemicals business in South America.

Each year BASF uses more than 400,000 tons of palm-based raw materials to produce, among others, ingredients for personal and household care products. With the global demand for palm oil and palm kernel oil growing rapidly, the social and environmental sustainability of the region of production of these raw materials is a concern for BASF, which aims to be a sustainable business. BASF committed that 100% of the palm oil and palm kernel oil purchased by the company by 2020 must be RSPO certified. As far as fractions and primary oleochemical derivatives are concerned, the group committed to reach this target by 2025.

Jacareí is BASF’s 16th production unit to be certified. The plant produces ingredients for the Personal Care and Home Care markets. RSPO certification is essential in these markets, since many of its formulations contain palm ingredients. "Renewable raw materials are important drivers of sustainability in the personal care and home sectors. Therefore, we want to ensure that all the raw materials we use are RSPO-certified and purchased from sustainable sources," explains Helene Menu, BASF’s Sustainability Consultant in South America.

"The certification of the Jacareí plant consolidates our position, allowing the production and local availability of an RSPO-certified product portfolio for our customers," Sanchez concludes.
